Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus

We do not stock eucalyptus trees at the Woodland Trust. In their native range in Australasia, eucalyptus species support a diversity of wildlife including koalas. Here in the UK, however, they have much lower biodiversity value as they don’t provide the resources our own wildlife requires.

We do stock trees for your garden that have similar perks for your outdoor space, plus added benefits for wildlife. However, no one species can fully replace another – it’s important to consider the soil preferences and flowering seasons of your alternative trees.

To provide a diverse range of benefits to the ecosystem we would instead recommend the following species:

Silver birch

  • Grows tall in just a few years.
  • Thrives in direct sunlight on drier, sandy soil.
  • Boasts beautifully textured bark.
  • Supports hundreds of insect species found in the UK.
  • Provides feeding opportunities for small birds like blue tits.

Buy silver birch trees.

Holly

  • Offers year-round beauty as an evergreen tree.
  • Supports insects like the holly blue butterfly.
  • Feeds birds in winter with its juicy berries.

Buy holly trees.
