Silver birch
Betula pendula
Silver birch is a graceful, attractive tree with light airy foliage and distinctive silvery-white peeling bark. It has triangular-shaped leaves on its elegant, drooping branches. They turn yellow then golden in autumn bringing striking colour to your garden. Look out for the fine display of catkins from spring to autumn. Silver birch is good when grown as a specimen tree.

15 - 20 metres, growing an estimated 40cm each year.
Purchase size and growth:
These trees are cell-grown saplings, ranging from approximately 15cm-60cm in height. Cell grown trees can be planted all year round in most situations as long as they are given the correct care. Please be aware that depending upon the time of year you receive your sapling (particularly early spring) it may not look very perky upon arrival, please do not worry once it has been planted it should pick up quickly.
Value to wildlife:
Small birds, such as long-tailed tits, siskin, greenfinches and redpolls, are attracted by the abundant seeds and insects that it hosts.
Silver birch preferred soil type or environmental conditions:
Prefers sandy or acidic soils although can grow in most conditions.
