Why do I have to pay extra postage for larger items?

Woodland Dedication

How do I dedicate online?

Our online shop provides a way to dedicate woodland online. You can dedicate with a single donation by choosing the quarter acre, acre with bench, acre with a post or existing bench that you’re interested in. You can dedicate larger areas by selecting multiple quarter acres. These don’t have to be next to each other but do have to be in the same grove.

How do I choose the wood I want my dedication to be in?

Woodland dedications are available in many of our woods but because every wood is unique, not all dedications are available in all woods. The map shows all Woodland Trust woods that dedications are currently available in. Some woods have multiple groves for dedications, so you are able to choose which grove as well. Please note that on very rare occasions woods may become unavailable for dedication. We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If this affects your choice, we will inform you as soon as possible and help you select an alternative wood.

Can I dedicate woodland outside of woodland dedication groves that are shown on the map?

Woodland dedications are only available in the designated woodland dedication groves. If you feel there is an area of the country where dedications should be available and they are currently not, please let us know.

Can I dedicate single trees?

Yes, the Woodland Trust offers a specific scheme for dedicating single trees in woodland sites around the UK.

If I order a quarter acre dedication or more, how will I know which trees are mine?

We'll mark the quarter acre dedication on your detailed map which you will be able to use to find the dedicated area. No markers are placed within the woodland as we try to keep our sites as natural as possible.

If I dedicate a pre-installed bench, what condition will it be in?

All of our pre-installed benches are placed into one of three condition categories, which is then reflected in the dedication price. The three categories are: Excellent: As new; £2,000 Very Good: Some minor signs of wear; £1,750 Good: Visible signs of wear but still usable; £1,500. You will be made aware of a bench’s condition during the dedication process. Pre-installed benches are reviewed on an annual basis to ensure the stated condition is still correct.

Is the land around a pre-installed bench already dedicated?

The acre surrounding a pre-installed bench is not dedicated and will not be made available for dedication.

Can I dedicate the land around a pre-installed bench?

The acre surrounding a pre-installed bench is not available for dedication. If you would like to dedicate a bench and acre choose our bench and acre option.

Can I choose to dedicate a new bench without an acre?

New benches are only available for dedication with an acre. If you would like to dedicate a bench without an acre chose our pre-installed bench option. Pre-installed benches that are listed as being in excellent condition are almost as new.

How long do new benches take to be installed?

Please note, new benches are crafted specifically for your dedication and normally take around 20 weeks to be installed in your chosen wood. We are unable to confirm installation dates, but we will progress installations as soon as we are able and will keep you updated on progress.

How long do posts take to be installed?

Please note, posts are crafted specifically for your dedication and normally take around 15 weeks to be installed in your chosen wood.

If I dedicate an area of woodland, can I plant trees, or have trees planted in it?

No. The woods we use for dedication purposes are already planted; indeed most of them are mature and we would not permit the planting of more trees. This is partly because we would be unable to nurture them in the vital first three years and spaces left in woods are usually left on purpose to provide meadows and grassy rides for both people and wildlife to enjoy and for natural regeneration. As many of our sites are ecologically fragile we also do not allow the planting of flowers or bulbs.

Will the Woodland Trust carry out any works in woods available for dedication?

It is the Woodland Trust’s responsibility to ensure woods are maintained in a safe condition and where possible improve the structure for biodiversity and enhance their resilience. As part of this remit the Woodland Trust may have to carry out forestry works in woods available for dedications. We will endeavour to minimise the impact to dedicated areas wherever possible and ensure that any benches or posts will either be protected during operations or where these have to be removed will be well cared for and subsequently returned safely to the wood in the same location whenever possible.

When will you plant my trees?

The trees are already growing. Dedications are made available in woods of all ages but the majority of the woods available have trees aged from 10 years on.

If I buy a bench, or have one made for me, can I put it in one of your woods?

The Woodland Trust already offers three choices of bench design in carefully selected woods at a price aimed to reflect the cost of both the bench and its installation, looking after the bench and the surrounding acre for the future, and maintaining the pathways leading to it. For this reason, and on safety grounds, we are unable to accept offers of benches or other furniture. As a conservation organisation our primary aim is to create new woodland and manage our existing woodland. In order to keep our woods as natural as possible we have to restrict the numbers of benches and grove posts, and at the same time raise funds to help us look after them and achieve our core aims.

What happens if my bench or post is damaged?

If a dedicated bench or post is damaged within 10 years of installation so it is unusable we will replace it at our cost and inform you of such. If this happens 10 years after the installation date, we will ask you for a donation to cover the cost of replacement. If you are unable, or do not wish to cover this cost the Woodland Trust reserves the right to remove furniture. We will return the plaque to you if wanted. If we do not hear from you, the plaque will be kept at our head office for a period of 1 year. Any areas that were dedicated alongside the bench or post will remain dedicated in perpetuity.

What happens if my pre-installed bench is damaged after dedication?

If a dedicated pre-installed bench is damaged to the point that it is unusable, we may replace it at our cost, depending on how many years have passed since the dedication was made. The associated time period varies depending on the condition of the bench at the time of dedication. The number of years (after date of dedication) for each grade are: Excellent: 8 years Very Good: 7 years Good: 6 years We will inform you should your bench be replaced. If your bench is damaged to the extent that is unusable outside of the above time periods, we will ask you for a donation to cover the cost of a replacement. If you are unable, or do not wish to cover this cost the Woodland Trust reserves the right to remove furniture. We will return the plaque to you if wanted - if not, we will keep it at our head office for a period of 1 year. Any areas that were dedicated alongside the bench will remain dedicated in perpetuity.

Can I customise/modify my dedication?

No, all dedications (including trees, benches and acre posts) are the property of the Woodland Trust. Any money paid by you is a donation and you do not own the dedication. Therefore, no unauthorised customisation, modifications, repairs or removal may be undertaken on any dedications.

I have dedicated woodland before and would like the same wood and cannot see it on your map?

Woodland dedications are only available in woods currently shown on the online shop. All of our sites have been thoroughly reviewed for their dedications suitability. The woods made available for dedications have been selected based on the quality of visitor experience they provide and ease of access. We are making improvements across our sites and will potentially be making new woodlands available for dedication as soon as they are suitable.

When will I receive my email certificate?

Email certificates are sent as soon as you have submitted your online dedication, though due to circumstances beyond our control they may occasionally take several minutes or possibly even hours before they arrive in the recipient's inbox. If you or another intended recipient do not receive it, then please email us at dedications@woodlandtrust.org.uk or call us on 0330 333 3300 providing full details of your donation. A copy of your donation confirmation is always helpful.

What size will my email certificate be if I print it?

The size of your email certificate depends on your printer settings. For best results we suggest printing as an A5 certificate.

How much is delivery?

All dedication donation packs are sent with free postage and packaging, but please be aware that any additional goods ordered alongside will be subject to our standard postage and packaging charges and may be dispatched separately.

Will you print my name on the certificate?

We only print on the certificate the wording you enter for the dedication.

I have made a mistake on my dedication - what should I do?

Please email us at dedications@woodlandtrust.org.uk or call us on 0330 333 3300 with your order details and tell us what you would like correcting. Regrettably we are unable to change any mistakes made on the personal message on the certificates.

Can I have the address of the wood to put in my satellite navigation system?

Woodland Trust woods do not have a postal address as there is no building on the site. It is therefore not possible for us to provide this for you. We suggest using the nearest road name.

Will there be signs directing me to the wood?

No, we do not put any signage on the roads giving directions. You will need to use the Ordnance Survey map and directions on the back of the wood information sheet that accompanies your certificate to help you locate the wood. You will see Woodland Trust signage on all gates and some entrances may also have Information Boards.

Does the Woodland Trust offer woodland burials?

The Woodland Trust does not currently offer a woodland burial scheme. For details of local councils and other organisations that operate such schemes, you may wish to contact the Natural Death Centre which has a complete and regularly updated list of around 200 schemes available in the UK: The Natural Death Centre 12a Blackstock Mews Blackstock Road London N4 2BT Tel: 0871 288 2098 Email: contact@naturaldeath.org.uk, www.naturaldeath.org.uk Otherwise, please contact your local authority directly.

Do you allow ashes to be scattered in your woods?

We understand why people wish to scatter ashes in our beautiful woodland. Our woods are wonderful natural places for wildlife and people. We hope you understand and appreciate how important it is to protect our precious and vulnerable woodland. As the UK’s leading conservation organisation, our priority is to protect and enhance woodland habitats - many of which are delicate ecosystems, home to rare and vulnerable species. Ashes can change the soil chemistry and damage the fragile balance which is why we respectively ask that ashes are not scattered in ancient woodland or near ancient trees which are particularly sensitive and already under threat. We do have many lovely woodland sites which are not ancient and therefore less sensitive and we are happy for ashes to be scattered carefully in these.

Please contact us and let us help you to find the right woodland for you. Phone: 0330 333 3300 Email: legacytrees@woodlandtrust.org.uk,  Post: Gifts in Wills Team, Woodland Trust, Kempton Way, Grantham, Lincs NG31 6LL. It would be very helpful if you could include the region or the name of the wood you are considering. We can then talk to our local colleagues who know our woods the best and we will come back to you with our recommendations within 2 weeks.

We have also produced the following guidelines to help ensure that your chosen woodland continues to thrive naturally and be a beautiful resting place.

  • We ask that you please scatter thinly over a wide area away from main pathways
  • Do not mark the ground in any way e.g. with flowers, crosses or large stones
  • Do not plant any bulbs/flowers or trees
  • Choose a quiet moment when fewer people are likely to be around

We do not charge for scattering of ashes and are very grateful to those who people kindly donate or choose to remember our work in their will. There are other ways to remember a loved one at our woods. We offer a range of personalised, lasting tributes through our Dedicate a Tree and Woodland Dedication options, as well as our ash keepsake jewellery range. If you would like to discuss one of the products in our in-memory range or a dedication in memory of a friend or family member, then please feel free to contact us.

Trees

Stock

Why can I not buy Ash trees from the Woodland Trust anymore?

It is predicted that ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) will kill up to 80% of ash trees in the UK. The government have banned the movement of ash seeds and trees to help limit the spread of pests and diseases into the UK. In accordance with the law, we have removed ash trees from sale and are supporting the calls for restriction of movement of ash trees. Read more about ash dieback.

Why can I not buy Scots Pine trees from the Woodland Trust anymore?

Due to the concerns over the tree disease Dothistroma needle blight (Dothistroma septosporum) affecting Scots Pine trees, we have made the decision to remove this species from the shop to try to help reduce the spread of the disease. Read more about Dothistroma.

Why are some trees out of stock?

There are many reasons that trees may be out of stock. In some instances, this will be due to weather conditions meaning saplings have not developed. It could also be because certain species have been unexpectedly popular. We will always do our best to ensure our range is in stock but sometimes there are factors outside our control. If a species, pack or mix you are interested in is out of stock we would suggest registering and selecting ‘Notify me when back in stock’, which will be displayed on the page for the species or pack you are wishing to purchase. This will ensure you immediately receive an email when this product becomes available for purchase.

Why do tree packs sometimes change species type?

We sometimes need to change species or numbers within a pack depending upon availability of the individual species. Our online shop will list the most up-to-date species information when an order is placed and therefore will reflect the pack you receive. If for any reason we need to amend this after you have purchased a pack, we will get in contact with you to confirm you are happy to receive the species variant. If you are not, we will of course supply a refund for your order.

Why are your subsidised packs not available?

Our subsidised tree pack range is only available for purchase at certain times of the year. Though they are not currently available, we do have a fantastic range of tree mixes and packs that you can purchase all year round.

If it’s the subsidised packs you are specifically looking for, they will be available in October.

Orders and Delivery

How long will delivery take?

Trees will be delivered within 10 working days of your order. If you have ordered any other items from our shop e.g. gifts or dedications, they will be dispatched separately. Your trees will be sent to you in secure packaging by Royal Mail or National Couriers.

The delivery timescales are subject to availability of the products ordered and circumstances beyond our control. We make every effort to deliver products within the above timescales; however delays are occasionally possible. If you do not receive your trees within 10 working days, please contact our Supporter Services team.

If you are purchasing more than one pack of trees they may be delivered separately to one another.

Can I order trees to be delivered to Northern Ireland or otherwise outside of the UK?

All our trees are UK and Ireland Sourced-and- Grown (UKISG).  We ship to England, Scotland, Wales and all UK islands. We do not deliver trees or hedgerow packs to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.

We will also not permit an order to be fulfilled if we are aware that it is your intention for your trees to leave England, Scotland, Wales or the UK islands which we deliver to.

What is the rationale for not shipping to Northern Ireland?

Our tree shop packs and trees are not available to ship to Northern Ireland.  We would like to provide a brief explanation as to why this is. As we have witnessed from ash dieback, which has led to widespread death of one of our most common native trees, tree pests and diseases pose a serious threat to our trees and woods. The movement of plants including trees is one of the main pathways for introducing new pests and diseases into ecosystems. It is essential that these biosecurity risks are assessed, and protocols put in place to protect Northern Ireland’s biodiversity from pests such as oak processionary moth and chestnut blight which are present in Great Britain, but not in Northern Ireland.

We are currently exploring ways of ensuring a tree supply in Northern Ireland that is in line with these principles. This includes working with multiple tree nurseries in the island of Ireland. We appreciate your understanding and patience while we work towards a biosecure and sustainable solution for our tree packs, and in the longer-term tree shop trees in Northern Ireland.

Can I have the saplings delivered to a different address to my billing address?

Yes, during the order process there is a facility to add an alternative name and address as a ‘shipping address’.

Can I order trees over Christmas?

You can order all year round but there is always a time during the Christmas window when our offices and nurseries close so we do not dispatch trees. Our Christmas ‘last orders’ date changes every year and will be published on our online shop when known.

Why haven’t I received all of my order?

Trees will be delivered within 10 working days of your order. If you have ordered any other items from our shop e.g. gifts or dedications they will be dispatched separately. Your trees will be sent to you in secure packaging by Royal Mail or National Couriers. The delivery timescales stated are subject to availability of the products ordered and circumstances beyond our control. We make every effort to deliver products within the above timescales, however delays are occasionally possible. If you do not receive your trees within 10 working days, please contact our Supporter Services team. Please be aware that if you are purchasing more than one pack of trees they may be delivered separately to one another. If there are items missing from your order please contact our Supporter Service team, providing your order number, and details of the problem you are experiencing.

Why have some pack prices increased?

Due to the current rate of inflation and increasing costs of materials, we have had to increase the prices of certain tree products. Our shop prices are reviewed on a regular basis and have been updated to ensure the best price possible for our supporters.

Can I return the trees and get a refund if I change my mind about my tree order?

We class trees as perishable items as they deteriorate rapidly if not stored in appropriate conditions. This means we are therefore unable to accept returns if you change your mind.

What can I do if I'm unhappy with the condition of the trees delivered?

Please get in touch and let us know. Problems may occur such as damage in transit or other issues with your saplings. We will ask you to provide images of your sapling(s) condition as you have received it in order to identify the problem. We will rectify this as quickly as possible. Where we can identify an issue, we will dispatch replacements where possible or refund your order if that is your preference.

If you are concerned about the condition of your tree sapling(s), please contact us immediately. You can do so by contacting our Supporter Services team via email at shop@woodlandtrust.org.uk.

Do you use plastics in the packaging of your tree products?

Plastic packaging is used for some of our tree products – for example, orders containing multiple trees may arrive wrapped in plastic film as displayed in some of the product images on our shop. This is to ensure that the root ball remains intact and protected during transit which gives your trees the best chance of survival. We use plastic because it is strong, lightweight and durable but we are constantly seeking to remove all single-use plastics such as these as part of our commitment to sustainability – the films that we currently use are made from LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and are 100% recyclable, we encourage users to recycle them when you are ready to plant your trees.

We regularly review our packaging and are working to reduce our plastic use where we can as we understand that this is not an ideal solution. We will continue to look for alternatives but currently, this is the best product for sending your trees in.

Saplings

What size are the saplings?

Saplings are young trees and often look a bit like a leafless twig. But don’t worry! This is completely normal as they’re currently in their dormant state and this will change quickly once they’re planted.

Each sapling is grown from seed in a container, meaning they have strong roots that are kept complete, and are able to grow quickly once planted. Not only that, but smaller trees:

Experience less shock in transit - This means they establish and adapt to their new soil, moisture and light conditions quickly.

Are easier and more sustainable to transport - Younger trees need less packaging, use fewer resources to transport, and produce a smaller carbon footprint than larger, potted trees.

As a result, our saplings have higher establishment rates and fewer losses than bare rooted trees, which are grown in the ground and have their roots severed during the ‘lifting’ process.

So, trust your twig! It might not look like much at first, but your sapling is a resilient, living investment. With a bit of patience and proper care, it will grow into a healthy, mature tree that supports wildlife, stores carbon and adds year-round colour to your outdoor space.

If you’d like to know how tall your trees are likely to grow, we specify the height range of each species we sell in our shop, so take a look and buy now.

What is this white residue that is growing on my sapling?

Mildew can be a common sight on plants and trees, especially in warm and damp conditions. Generally, a tree with mildew can be left alone and should not be a cause for concern, but if you are concerned your tree is struggling a qualified arborist will be able to help.

Why is the sapling so small, it looks like a twig?

If your sapling looks more like a twig than a leafy tree, don’t panic! It’s likely just dormant, and while this might give the impression that it’s unhealthy, it’s actually part of a tree’s life cycle.

Dormancy usually occurs between late autumn and early spring, and during this time, your tree:

  • conserves its energy
  • protects itself from frost damage
  • focuses on root growth rather than top growth

In fact, this stage is the perfect time to plant your tree as it gives it chance to settle its roots before the growing season begins, and as long as it’s cared for properly, it will produce new leaves in spring. If you’re still unsure, scrape a small piece of bark back and you should see pale green wood underneath, which means the tree is healthy.

What will you do if they fail to grow?

If they are protected from vermin, watered in the summer and kept weed free there should be no reason why they should fail to grow. The Woodland Trust cannot be held responsible for the failure of the sapling if sufficient care has not been taken. We are more than happy to provide some guidance and advice. If you are concerned about your sapling you can contact us, providing a photo of the trees condition and planted location and email it to: shop@woodlandtrust.org.uk, alternatively you can call our Supporter Services team on 0330 333 3300.

What happens if my sapling looks dead on arrival? & Do I need to plant my tree immediately?

There are certain times of year that your sapling will be in a dormant state; this may give the impression of an unhealthy tree. Please be aware that this is perfectly normal and your tree will produce new leaves in spring as long as it is cared for correctly, however if you are unsure of this you can scrape back a small piece of the bark and you should see pale new wood underneath which will mean that the tree is healthy.

Regardless of when your tree is purchased, remove it from the box upon arrival and keep it upright, moist and sheltered from any frost and wind.

Between April and September, plant your saplings within two days of arrival. If you can’t plant them straight away, make sure you keep the roots moist and monitor carefully to make sure they don’t dry out

From October to March, your trees will be dormant, so as long as they’re removed from the box, kept upright, and kept moist and sheltered, they’ll be fine for up to two weeks. Make sure they don’t dry out or freeze.

How fast will my sapling grow?

Growth rates depend on the species, soil, sunlight and care, and the first year is mostly about root establishment. The real growth takes place in years two and three, but you should see some progress in the first year.

What are cell grown trees/ why do we use them?

Cell grown trees are young plants (1-2 years) that are grown in small containers of soil. The trees remain in their growing containers until they are needed to fulfil orders, then carefully lifted out. Because they are grown in individual cells, there is no need to cut or disturb the root system as with bare-rooted trees.

The trees are delivered with the soil plugs intact, which protects the roots from damage and helps keep them moist. You can plant cell grown trees all year round (unlike other tree options which must be planted during the winter months), but additional care including watering may be needed if planting in warm weather.

We use cell grown trees as they are easier to handle and plant thanks to the extra protection offered by the soil plug. They experience rapid early growth, which helps them establish quickly and withstand competition from weeds. This means that the tree has a high chance of survival even if you don’t have any planting experience. They may even grow in areas where other trees have struggled!

Cell grown trees can also survive longer before being replanted, provided that the soil plugs are kept moist, so you will not have to plant the tree immediately upon delivery. These benefits make cell grown trees the ideal choice for much of our work, including our online shop and planting events.

Tree Suppliers

Where are your trees from?

All our trees are UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG); those of Irish provenance are only used in Northern Ireland and not brought to the mainland UK. Find out more about the UKISG scheme.

Pre-purchase questions

What tree should I plant?

The decision to purchase and plant a tree is reliant on many factors e.g.: colour preferences, garden type, purpose, wildlife to your garden and where to put them. We have a planting advice page that includes a PDF guide to 38 native species

Can I plant my tree in a container/ pot?

Whilst growing trees in containers is ideal for small gardens or where space is limited you need to consider the longer term care it will require. If you have limited space, read our blog for advice on the best British trees for gardens.

What tree would suit my soil and/ or location?

Our comprehensive guide to 38 native tree species includes soil preferences, average height, unique qualities and more. Download now to discover which species are best suited to your needs.

What can I use to plant a hedgerow?

If you are looking for hedges for small planting projects e.g. less than 100 metres or your garden please visit our shop hedging category.

The following species make good hedging trees:

  • Blackthorn
  • Common beech
  • Crab apple
  • Hawthorn
  • Hazel

  • Wayfaring

If you are looking to taking on a larger scale planting project, please consider our MOREhedges scheme. We can subsidise up to 75% of the cost if you plant more than 100 metres of new hedging allowing a large tree to grow every six metres. To find out more about the scheme and further advice and guidance on planting please visit the MOREhedges FAQ page.

Why don’t you sell larger/ older saplings?

Our saplings are 20-50 cm tall. This makes them easy to transport, easy to handle and easy to plant. Saplings such as rowan and birch establish very quickly and can reach an adult’s head height in around eight years, with slow growers such as oak taking longer. The saplings can also be self-supporting, so they don’t need increasingly large stakes to keep them secure.

We don’t currently sell older trees – but if you think we should, let us know by emailing shop@woodlandtrust.org.uk
