Wild cherry
Prunus avium
Please note that some saplings may be cut back by our experienced team to help manage and control brown patches that have developed, driven by early signs of shot hole. Cutting back is a common treatment of shot hole, which is a fungal disease (Wilsonomyces carpophilus, or Coryneum blight) that creates holes in leaves and lesions on branches. Holes are yet to develop on our saplings, and our team is keeping a close eye on this.
Additionally, due to the time of year, some saplings may appear to have dropped their leaves. This is a natural part of the seasonal cycle as many trees enter a period of dormancy during the colder months. While they may look bare, don't worry. Your trees are healthy and will continue to thrive, grow, and produce new foliage as the seasons change.
Wild cherry is possibly the most attractive of our native trees. It has beautiful clouds of blossom in spring (sometimes referred to as cherry blossom) and its bright summer fruits bring a splash of vivid colour. Its warm autumn leaves fade to a deep crimson, giving your garden a warm glow.
Wild cherry estimated full grown height:
18 - 25 metres, growing an estimated 20-40cm each year.
Purchase size and growth:
Due to current growing conditions this species may be shorter than we usually expect and fall outside of approximations given.
These trees are cell-grown saplings, ranging from approximately 15cm-60cm in height. Cell grown trees can be planted all year round in most situations as long as they are given the correct care. Please be aware that depending upon the time of year you receive your sapling (particularly early spring) it may not look very perky upon arrival, please do not worry once it has been planted it should pick up quickly.
Value to wildlife:
Wild cherry makes a wonderful addition to any wildlife garden, the avium in the scientific name refers to birds which eat the cherries as soon as they are ripe. The spring blossom also provides an early source of nectar and pollen which attracts a whole range of insects.
Wild cherry preferred soil type or environmental conditions:
Grows best in full sunlight and fertile soil. It won’t tolerate waterlogged soil. Strong winds can quickly destroy showy spring blossom, so consider planting in a sheltered location.
UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG):
Every sapling that we provide is UK and Ireland sourced and grown to minimise the risk of importing and spreading tree pests and diseases. Seeds are collected and stored in the UK and Ireland, and they are all coded and batched so that we can track each individual tree.
