IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to current growing conditions, the Hawthorn in this pack is smaller than we would usually like. The Hawthorn saplings are currently around 10cm, although they are healthy and we anticipate they will flourish in the next few months.
Hawthorn is an amazing tree for wildlife gardens and can be planted as a hedge or single tree. It has beautiful pink-white blossom in May and ruby-red berries, called haws, in summer. The appearance of the May blossom was the herald of the end of winter and the beginning of summer.
Hawthorn estimated full grown height:
15 metres, but its height can be controlled by pruning. Hawthorn trees grow an estimated 40-60cm each year.
Purchase size and growth:
These trees are cell-grown saplings, ranging from approximately 15cm-60cm in height. Cell grown trees can be planted all year round in most situations as long as they are given the correct care. Please be aware that depending upon the time of year you receive your sapling (particularly early spring) it may not look very perky upon arrival, please do not worry once it has been planted it should pick up quickly.
Value to wildlife:
A fantastic tree for wildlife that can support more than 300 species of insect. Its flowers are eaten by dormice and provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. The haws are rich in antioxidants and are eaten by migrating birds such as redwings.
Hawthorn preferred soil type or environmental conditions:
A shade-tolerant tree for non-acid well-drained to moist soils. Can be planted as part of a native hedgerow.
