High quality art print of one of the 60 botanical watercolours created in 1906 by Clarence Bicknell for his Casa Fontanalba Visitors’ Book. There are four flowers native to UK woodland in this collection. Perfect for framing and gifting, or hanging at home.
Bicknell was an English vicar, archaeologist, botanist, artist, Esperantist, author, philanthropist and early environmentalist. He worked to ensure wildflowers were left untouched in their mountain habitat and developed a diet and recipes using wild plants. In 1906 he built his own summer house at Casterino on the French-Italian border in the Alps. He decorated the interior of the Casa Fontanalba with his own paintings with botanical and archaeological themes in an Arts-and-Crafts style. Every opening of the Visitors' Book is illustrated by Bicknell with water-colours of flowers of the Alps on the right page. The left-hand pages were left empty so that guests who stayed at the Casa Fontanalba could sign their name and the date.
